Why is eau de toilette cheap? ›

An eau de cologne (EDC) is the least concentrated, an eau de toilette (EDT) is slightly more concentrated, and an eau de parfum (EDP) is the most concentrated. The more concentrated the perfume, the more expensive the price tag.

Concentration level of fragrance oil: One of the primary differences between EDP, EDT and parfum is the concentration of perfume oils in each type. Parfum has the highest concentration with up to 40%, while EDP has a concentration of 15-20% and EDT contains 5-15% perfume oil. This effects the fragrance's longevity.

Eau De Parfum's are made with a higher concentration of perfume oil, normally between 12-18%, which gives them a stronger scent. In contrast, Eau De Toilette's usually have a concentration between 8-12%, giving the scent a lighter feel.

In french, "Eau" translates to water, while "toilette" refers to the bathroom or the act of washing one's self. "Eau de toilette" is fitting for a less concentrated fragrance, while "Eau de parfum" is generally richer in scent and long-lasting.
