How do you win the lowest unique bid auction? ›

In this case the winner is the first person who made the lowest bid of the two lowest bids. So get in early or you might lose a winning opportunity. Make multiple bids to outrun other bidders. This is one of the essential strategies in the lowest bid auction.

The general rule of thumb for silent auctions is to make the bid increment 10% of the fair market value or $5—whichever is greater. If you've set the starting bid at 30%, you can reach 70% in as few as four additional bids.

Bid sniping—including the use of software that places bids for you—is allowed on eBay, but it doesn't guarantee you'll win an auction. Other members may be using the same tactic, may have set up automatic bidding, or may simply react quickly and place a higher bid before the auction ends.

Bide your time. You stand a greater chance of getting the item by placing your highest bid in the closing seconds. If an auction listing has a reserve price, bid up to that amount as early as possible, so other bidders aren't attracted by the low starting price.

A good rule of thumb is to provide 1 or 2 auction items for every bidder or spender at your event. For a guest list of 100 people (roughly 50 couples who'll be bidding and spending together), approximately 25-35 items would create an effective market that's competitive but not overwhelming.

If a bid is placed in the last 5 minutes of the lot due to end, this end time will be extended by a further 5 minutes to prevent bid sniping.

The purpose of the 5 minute rule is to stop last minute sniping where bidders wait till the last possible moment to place their bid - even if the previous highest bid was hours before - so that the previous highest bidder has no opportunity to respond before the auction ends.

If you win an auction, the item should appear in your Purchase History as awaiting payment. If not, it should appear on your Bids & Offers page under "Didn't win". If you add an item you are interested in bidding on to your Watch List, that makes it easier to find the item again no matter what happens to it.
