What is a pass rider in United? ›

A pass rider is defined as any individual using pass travel privileges, such as, but not limited to the employee, early-out participant or retiree and their eligible spouse/domestic partner, enrolled friend, parents, children and buddy (if applicable) pass riders.

Airlines, by practice (in USA anyway), overbook their flights. Which is to say they sell more tickets than seats, expecting a small percentage of no-shows and last-minute cancellations. Overbooked ticketed passengers get put on the standby list.
